CI AND VI PARTICLES

CI AND VI PARTICLES

- In some circumstances ci and vi replace the unstressed personal pronouns of first and second person plural (ci = noi/a noi; vi = voi/a voi).

For example: Ci piace il tuo vestito. → A noi piace il tuo vestito. (We like your dress.)
Ci ha seguiti.  Ha seguito noi. (They followed us.)
Vi racconto tutto dopo. A voi racconto tutto dopo.
                  (Later I’ll tell you everything.)

Vi amo e vi bacio.  Amo voi e bacio voi. (I love you and I kiss you.)

- In other circumstances they’re used to represent a place. When ci and vi replace a site or a location and answer to the question dove?, where?, they’re adverbs of place.

For example: Vai spesso in piscina? Sì, ci vado ogni lunedì. (Vado dove? In piscina)
(Do you often go to the swimming pool? Yes, I go there every Monday.)
Ci stays for the place where the subject goes every Monday: the swimming pool.

Abitano molte persone in quel paese? Sì, vi abitano in molti.
Do many people live in that town? Yes, many people live there.
Vi stays for the place where many people live: vi = in quel paese.

- Ci and vi can also replace a demonstrative pronoun (a questo/a quello, su questo/su quello, di questo/di quello, da questo/da quello).

For example:  Ci penseremo con calma  Penseremo a questo con calma.
(Calmly we will think about it.)
Questo concorso è molto importante: vi partecipano artisti internazionali
A questo concorso partecipano artisti internazionali.
(Many international artist take part in this contest.)

THE PARTICLE NE

- Ne can have the function of an adverb of place.
For example:    Eravamo allo stadio ma ce ne siamo andate.
(We were at the stadium but went
away.)
Ne = da lì, from there: from the stadium.

- Ne can be an invariable personal pronoun.
In this case, ne means:  di lui
                                  di lei
                                  di loro
di questa / di quella cosa
                                  di ciò

For example:   Vuoi ancora un po’ di pasta? No, non ne voglio più.
                      ne = di pasta
(Do you want another little pasta? No, I don’t.)
I genitori pensavano al figlio in Australia: ne parlavano spesso.
ne = di lui, del figlio
(Parents thought of their son in Australia: they often talk about him.)
Basta con tutta questa politica! Non ne posso più!
ne = di questa cosa, della politica
(It’s enough! Stop talking about politics.)
I nostri amici sono partiti da poco, non ne abbiamo ancora notizie.
ne = di loro, degli amici
(Our friends have just left: we don’t have any news yet.)

- Ne can be coupled with unstressed personal pronouns.
These pronouns are mi ( = me, a me), ti ( = te, a te), si ( = sé, a sé), ci ( = noi, a noi) e vi
( = voi, a voi).

When these pronouns couple with ne, they change the ending vowel, from i to e: they change into:

me ne: Non me ne importa nulla. → A me non importa nulla di questa cosa.
(I don’t care about this thing.)
te ne: Te ne occupi tu?  Ti occupi tu di questa cosa?
(Are you going to do that?)
se ne: Se ne pentirà.  Lui si pentirà di questa cosa.
            (He will regret this thing.)
ce ne: Forse ce ne preoccupiamo troppo  Forse ci preoccupiamo troppo di questa cosa.
(Maybe we worry too much about this.)
ve ne: Forza con questi costumi! Ve ne mancano ancora tre.  Vi mancano ancora tre costumi.
(Hurry up with these costumes ! You still miss three !)

- Also the masculine pronoun gli can be coupled with ne: it changes into gliene, written all together. The feminine singular pronoun le is absorbed by this masculine form.
Then gliene means:

a lui di ciò: Non gliene parlare! (Don’t tell him that !)
a lei di ciò: Non gliene dare più, ne ha già mangiate troppe !
(Don’t give her more ones, she
has already eaten too much of them!)
a loro di ciò: Non gliene piace nemmeno uno. (He doesn’t like neither one of them.)
di quella cosa / di questa cosa: Gliene ho lasciato un pezzetto da assaggiare.
                                                 (I left him to
taaste a little piece of it.)

COMBINED PRONOUNS

Mi, ti, si, ci e vi, as we saw, if followed by the pronoun ne, change into me, te, se, ce, ve. The same transformation happens also when these pronouns are followed by lo, la, li, le.
